Trades workers and technology connect
Five and a half hours. That’s how long the drive was for Ron McGuire, field rep/BIM specialist for the International Training Institute (ITI), who made the trek from his home in Minnesota to SMART Local #265 in Carol Stream, Illinois, for Bluebeam’s first Apprentice Roadshow event of 2019. That sort of drive is not new to Ron, who is on the road for most of the year traveling to the SMART union’s local sheet metal training centers across North America and training the union’s members on technology tools that will help them work more efficiently in the field and adapt to the ever-changing jobsite.
When Bluebeam first met Ron in 2016, the Bluebeam Academic Program didn’t yet include programming for skilled trades training centers. It was with his help, and the help of other influential trades’ training leaders across the US, that Bluebeam began offering free software and assistance to trades training centers around the world. The effort is currently reaching thousands of apprentices and journey workers who are using Revu in the field.
Bluebeam’s community of skilled trades partners now includes carpenters, sheet metal workers, Pipefitters, electricians, plumbers, ironworkers and finishing trades, among others who are shaping the build environment with their unwavering dedication and expertise. Through efforts like the Apprentice Roadshows, Bluebeam is creating opportunities for trades partners to connect at their home locales, and not only demo tools and features in Bluebeam Revu that are relevant to their work, but also to talk about some of the challenges and opportunities that exist for field technology. In today’s ever-evolving industry, technology is bridging the knowledge gap between seasoned trades workers and the newer generation, and Bluebeam is happy to collaborate on events like the Apprentice Roadshows that allow construction peers to get to know the apprentices, journey workers, foremen, superintendents, and training leadership members who are raising projects from the ground up all around the world.
“The 2019 apprentice roadshow was an outstanding opportunity for our SMART Union Skilled Trade Apprentices to understand the power and benefits of using Bluebeam Revu. Using Revu to create a PDF and have the ability to organize, mark up, and collaborate on a construction jobsite will make the installation of sheet metal more productive and efficient.” – SMART Local #265
During the SMART Local #265 Apprentice Roadshow, Amanda Wieting, technical account manager for Bluebeam, Inc., presented a demonstration of Revu eXtreme to showcase some of the tools and features that are most relevant to those in the field, including tool sets, markup tools, and the Revu for iPad app. “For me, the value of being there was connecting with the attendees and understanding the challenges they face day-to-day, while also having the opportunity to show them a few things that can save them time during their day,” explains Wieting. “My favorite part of presenting at events like this is the people that come up to talk to me afterwards and show me how they’re using Bluebeam Revu in innovative ways unique to their workflows. Even after five years working at Bluebeam, I continue to be blown away by our users and what they are doing with our products.”
